Selective capturing of operational memory of the built environment by means of digital infrastructure. A passive NFC chip at a threshold. A human who witnesses the condition. A hash chain that preserves the judgment. A constitution that governs the data. A read-only gate that serves verified physical-world truth to any AI agent on any platform.
01
What Symbious™ is
A protocol for operational memory. Subject-agnostic — it applies to any environment with thresholds that humans witness: buildings, kitchens, workshops, vehicles, farms, heritage sites, neighbourhoods.
Selective
The Concordat defines what is captured and what is constitutionally forbidden. Three questions per threshold. The selection is the governance.
Capturing
The memory exists for 20 seconds in the cook's head. Then it vanishes. The chip captures it before it disappears. Like a photograph captures light.
Operational memory
Not data. Not analytics. Memory. Cumulative, hash-chained, compounding over time. The building remembers how it was cared for.
Built environment
Any physical space where operations happen. A kitchen. A warehouse. A vintage car. A heritage district. A brewery.
Digital infrastructure
An NFC chip. A phone already in the pocket. A URL. A hash chain. An MCP gate. Invisible. Permanent.
The name is derived, not chosen. Sym (Greek, σύν — together) + bios (Greek, βίος — life) + -ous (having the nature of). As luminous means having the nature of light, symbious means having the nature of living together — the place and the people who care for it, each giving the other memory.
02
Where it comes from
Symbious™ is not a new idea. It is the third generation of a technology lineage that began with a different problem at the same venue.
2012 — Square
A credit card reader plugged into a phone turned every counter into a point of sale. The hardware disappeared into the phone. The transaction became frictionless. Square proved that a physical-to-digital bridge could be a THB 1,000 device instead of a THB 50,000 terminal.
2019 — QR menu
A QR code on a restaurant table replaced printed menus. Guests scanned with their phone — no app, no download. The menu became updatable, multilingual, and free to produce. Years of ordering data accumulated. The front-of-house was digitised. The back-of-house remained invisible.
2026 — NFC chip
A passive NFC chip on a kitchen wall captures the operational judgment that no QR code and no credit card reader ever recorded: was the hood cleaned? Is the oil amber? Was the fridge checked? The same phone. The same zero-install principle. A different kind of truth — not what was ordered, but how the space was cared for.
Each generation solved the problem the previous one could not see. Square digitised the transaction. QR digitised the menu. NFC digitises the operational memory that existed only in the heads of the people who worked there.
Three generations · same venue · same phone · different truth
03
How it works
Two loops. The inner loop runs continuously — each tap is recorded, compared against the accumulated baseline, and deviations trigger anomaly alerts. The pattern improves the questions the chip asks next. The outer loop runs periodically — AI agents query the accumulated memory through the constitutional gate and the building becomes context for any model on any platform.
Inner loop: each tap improves the next question · anomalies alert the operator · Outer loop: agents read the accumulated memory through the constitutional gate
No app install. No dedicated hardware beyond the chip. No sensor. No camera. No battery. The human is the sensor. The phone is the data channel. The hash chain is the memory. The Concordat governs every layer.
The human brain operates at 20 watts, performing multimodal sensory integration, contextual reasoning, and operational judgment. The NFC chip captures the output of that computation for 0.03 watt-seconds. This is the most energy-efficient operational data collection architecture currently available.
Each event links to the previous via SHA-256 · tamper-proof · append-only · the memory grows with every tap
04
MCP Gate
A set of read-only query tools published to the MCP registry. Any AI agent on any platform — Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini — queries physical-world operational state through the same constitutional gate. The gate exposes deployment health, threshold condition, hash chain integrity, and pattern signals. Nothing more.
No write operations exist. No write operations will ever exist. The MCP Gate is structurally read-only. Concordat Tier 3 anonymised data only. No individual identity in any response. The only MCP server where the privacy constraints cannot be changed by anyone — including the operator.
Physical world → constitutional gate → any AI agent · read-only · anonymised · platform-agnostic
05
The Concordat
Twelve articles. Ten unamendable prohibitions. CC0 — published to the public domain. No future owner, no acquirer, no board resolution can revoke these constraints. Written before commercial pressure exists. Acknowledging Anthropic's Constitutional AI lineage.
Individual operator data is never sold to any third party.
The system is never used for surveillance of individuals.
No individual data is used against the interests of the person who generated it.
No data is retained beyond its operational purpose.
No leverage is created over data subjects through their data.
No third-party access without a data processing agreement.
No production data is used for development purposes.
No data transfer without adequate safeguards.
No weaponisation of operational data for competitive, legal, or political harm.
No administrator access to individual operator records.
Symbious™ is a protocol, not a vertical product. The question catalog changes. The architecture doesn't.

Laboratory infrastructure
Symbious™ is presently operated as laboratory infrastructure. Operational data is captured under controlled conditions at instrumented test sites — not commercial deployments. The hardware, data architecture, and governance instruments are exercised before the platform meets an independent, arm's-length client.
Test Site A — F&B operations
A restaurant environment instrumented across kitchen, cold storage, bar, service area, and back of house. The test site that proved the architecture — evolving from years of QR-based ordering data into NFC operational memory. The lineage made physical.
8 nodes · 5 zones · operational memory accumulating
Test Site B — Craft production + DPP
A workshop environment instrumented across cutting, assembly, quality control, material storage, and showroom. Digital Product Passport per finished piece. Hash-chained provenance from raw material to finished product.
20 nodes · 3 zones · DPP chain exercised
Two instrumented test sites · same architecture · different operational domains

Two natural analogies illuminate the architecture before the academic frameworks that validate it.
The pheromone model — each tap deposits a trace · frequented paths strengthen · abandoned paths fade
Ants leave pheromone trails. No ant knows the colony's plan. Each deposits a chemical trace at the point where it made a decision. Frequented paths grow stronger. Abandoned paths fade. The colony's intelligence emerges from the accumulated residue of threshold decisions — not from a central brain.
Symbious™ works the same way. Each tap is a pheromone deposit. Frequented thresholds build strong baselines. Abandoned thresholds fade into anomaly alerts. The building's intelligence emerges from the trail left behind by the people who cared for the space.
The ship's log model — the oldest form of operational memory · the hash chain is its digital successor
A ship's log is the oldest form of operational memory. Every watch, the officer records position, weather, heading, condition, and incidents. Sequential, append-only, signed. It cannot be altered retroactively. It survives the voyage, the captain, and the crew. The ship's history is the log — not the ship itself.
The hash chain is the ship's log of the built environment. Each tap is an entry. Each entry is signed by the operator who witnessed it. The chain is append-only and tamper-evident. The building's operational history is the chain.
23 independent sources — spanning Nobel-level research, enterprise AI, chip engineering, economics, cognitive science, and constitutional governance — each validate a different facet of the architecture. None know Symbious™ exists. All describe the problem it solves.
Pheromone Trails
Ant colonies. No central brain. Intelligence emerges from accumulated threshold deposits. Frequented paths strengthen. Abandoned paths fade. The NFC tap is the pheromone. The baseline is the trail.
The Ship's Log
Maritime tradition. Sequential, append-only, signed by the officer on watch. Cannot be altered retroactively. Survives the captain and the crew. The hash chain is the ship's log of the built environment.
Reward is Enough
David Silver, DeepMind. A single scalar reward signal produces all attributes of intelligence. The next tap confirming or contradicting a prediction is the reward. The hash chain is a reinforcement learning environment for physical-world operations.
Weak Links
Chad Jones, Stanford. The scarce factor captures all economic value. Human threshold judgment is the weak link that AI cannot automate. As AI automates everything else, the human witness becomes more valuable — not less.
Verification Bottleneck
Demis Hassabis, DeepMind. In physical sciences, hypothesis generation is cheap — physical verification is the bottleneck. Symbious™ makes verification cheap: one chip per threshold, seconds per tap, hash-chained permanently.
Agentic Commerce
John Collison, Stripe. AI agents will transact on behalf of humans via microtransactions. Query pricing per request — meaningless to the agent, compounding into significant revenue at scale.
Behavioural Infrastructure
Andrej Karpathy. Stop prompting, start building environments of rules, constraints, and verification loops. The Concordat is behavioural infrastructure for physical-world data. The hash chain is the verification loop.
Society of Mind
Marvin Minsky, MIT. Intelligence emerges from thousands of simple agents competing — no central processor. Design the environment so the right agents win without a fight. The NFC chip at the threshold is environment design.
Data Movement
Reiner Pope, MatX. In chip design, moving data costs more than computing it. In building operations, moving operational truth from the cook's head to a record is the expensive part. The chip at the threshold eliminates data movement entirely.
No-Cloning Theorem
Quantum mechanics. An unknown quantum state cannot be copied. A missed tap cannot be recreated. The temporal moat is not a business strategy — it is a physical law applied to operational memory.
Fractal Electronics
A transistor is a threshold gate at nanometre scale. An NFC chip is a threshold gate at human scale. Billions of transistors produce computation. Thousands of taps produce operational memory. The human is the current — carrying not energy but judgment.
Constitutional AI
Anthropic. Values embedded into system architecture rather than applied as policy overlay. The Concordat extends this principle from language model training to physical-world data infrastructure. Absent schema fields enforce prohibitions structurally.

Use case — live event
A music festival. Two locations. 500 people. 25 crew. 12 hours. The same protocol that gives a kitchen operational memory gives an event production intelligence — changeover times, bar restocks, crowd flow, safety checks, and a post-event report auto-generated from the accumulated taps.
12 NFC chips · stage, bar, food, safety, backstage, crew, gates · the event remembers itself
